Motivational Minute

May 15, 2000

Hello Friends!

Here is a message of POWER and PASSION to get your week started with ENTHUSIASM!

Please feel free to share it with your friends and associates.

Do you really trust AND respect the people you work with everyday? These age old values are too often non-existent in our competitive society. With good reason, many people fear being used, or worry about having their own ideas stolen or copied. In addition to that, our competitive nature tends to come out when someone else does better than us at something we want to do well. It can be challenging at times to have respect and admiration for others. Yet it is an important component to attaining well-balanced success.

John F. Akers, former Chairman of IBM, once said: "Set your expectations high; find men and women whose integrity and values you respect; get their agreement on a course of action; and give them your ultimate trust." So a solid way to move toward your goals is to have MUTUAL understanding with those people that you respect or should learn to respect. It is also important to have supreme FAITH in those very same people.

There is an experiment that is very often done to prove trust. You group yourself in pairs, standing single file. The person in front has to fall backwards, having total belief that the person behind will keep them from hitting the floor. It is a great test of faith in others, and it requires you to completely surrender control.

It's a simple experiment, but one that has some powerful lessons. We always seem to need ultimate control in everything we do. We just can't handle turning over the steering wheel to anyone else. Yet respect and trust can be the key to getting where we want to be even faster.
Delegation, for example --

Many times, we are faced with overwhelming amounts of work, either at home or at our jobs, and completion of any part becomes impossible. We tend to not entrust others with even the smallest portions of the task for fear that it won't be done just as we would.

However, by attempting to do too much at once, the overall project still isn't up to our own standards. If you are in the position to delegate responsibility, you are selecting someone you trust to do his or her best. If done right, delegating some duties can alleviate stress, build confidence in yourself and in others, and improve your overall work performance.

Your coworkers, friends and family may be a part of your recipe for success. Their shared knowledge can be part of a vast pool you can dip into when your own pool runs dry. Of course they too can do the same. NO LOSERS HERE! You ALL benefit! Everyone wins!

As writer Katherine Mansfield once said, "I am treating you as my friend, asking you to share in my present minuses in the hope that I can ask you to share in my future pluses." It is so fulfilling to be a part of others achievements. It is so rewarding to have them around you when you achieve something. Their friendship, trust and respect will mean everything when you cross that finish line!

Finally, in the words of David Armistead, "Trust each other again and again. When the trust level gets high enough, people transcend apparent limits, discovering new and awesome abilities for which they were previously unaware."

CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO TRUST. DARE TO HAVE FAITH IN YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COWORKERS AND HAVE THE COURAGE TO LET GO OF THE WHEEL.

LAUGH-A-DAY

Some thoughts to ponder:

Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

Why are there five syllables in the word "monosyllabic"?

Last night someone played a blank tape at full blast. The mime next door went nuts.

What's the speed of dark?

QUOTE-OF-THE-DAY
